Lovelies, please welcome Belinda to the blog today!  I had the great opportunity to ask her a few questions and share her answers with all of you today.  Be sure to continue reading to the bottom of the post because there will be a giveaway at the end! :)

Theresa: Can you tell us something interesting about your writing process?

Belinda:  Hmmm something interesting …. Well when I begin writing each day, I need total silence. I musthave ADD or something because even the slightest noise throws me off and the next thing I know, I’m on Facebook chatting or surfing the Internet. All while my characters are standing around wondering what happened! Once I get into the story though, I turn on my play list and pick a song. I usually go with something that has a great beat and can help me tap into the emotion I’m wanting.

Theresa:  Who is your favorite character (that you’ve written)?

Belinda:  I really enjoy all the characters I’ve written. I’m having a blast with Mason and Darcy and love the kind of relationship they have with each other. But I will admit its future characters I’m excited to write as well. Devlin is the vampire enforcer sent to help learn more about the use of vampire blood and everyone will meet him in Blood Oath (installment #3). When I outlined the story line, I laughed so hard coming up with scenes with him. He’s definitely a cocky character with swagger but watch out, you threaten those he loves and he’ll not think twice about attacking.

Theresa:  Is there anything you’re working on now?

Belinda:  I’m working on both Blood Oath, which is the next installment in the Mystic Wolves series, and Broken Promises, a full length novel and book #1 in the Brianna Lane series. Both havesupernatural influences in them and are a lot of fun to write. I’m hoping my schedule is startingto calm down so I can finish them quickly and release them!

Theresa:  Where did the idea for your book come from?

Belinda:  To begin with, Without Mercy was only ever going to be a short story in an anthology and was the result of a dream. Ever wake up and be swamped with all kinds of intense emotions? I remember feeling this intense grief and anger, seeing a few images and wondering “What am I going to do with this?” I carried around this gut wrenching feeling all day, always on the verge of tears. My BFF finally suggested I write the scene down and I did. I went on my merry way and all was right in the world.
A little later, I was invited to contribute a short story. I immediately thought of my dream and worked more on it, fully completing the scene. But the impatient person I am, I couldn’t wait so I decided to release it. Holy smokes! The support and feedback I got from everyone was amazing and that’s when my BFF stepped forward again and suggested I turn it into a series – releasing a new installment every 4-6 weeks. I sat down, plotted out a bunch of novellas and the rest was history.

Theresa:  Are any of the characters inspired by someone in real life?

Belinda:  I wouldn’t say they are the sole focus but you can definitely find pieces of people I love in the characters of Mystic Wolves. For example, when I finished Cherished and took a closer look at Mason, I realized “Wow, he reminds me of my husband.” I’ve been married for 11 years and there have been times where, like Mason, my husband has helped me realize how cherished I am. He shows the same love and devotion and it amazed me how it bled over into the story.

Theresa:  Do you follow a writing schedule, or just write whenever you get the chance?

Belinda:  I have so many different priorities as a blogger, promoter and writer, it’s vital that I have a schedule just so I can get everything done. Right now, I’m playing around with the schedule I have because things have changed and I’m trying to find what works. It helps knowing I have a routine but I also try to be flexible. If inspiration hits or the characters begin chatting loudly, I try to write then and there. Sometimes it works and I get excited by how much I’m able to accomplish.

Theresa:  Describe your book in a tweet (140 characters or less).

Belinda:  Can Darcy let go of the shame of failure consuming her or will Mason convince her that after all is said and done, she truly is CHERISHED?

Theresa:  What was last book you bought?

Belinda:  It was Lover Unleashed. Totally addicted to the Black Dagger Brotherhood at the moment … I <3Rehvenge!!

Theresa:  If you could no longer write, what career would you choose instead?

Belinda:  I would definitely stay in the book world somewhere! It wouldn’t really matter what I was doing either as long as I was following my passion for reading. I’ve even talked with my husband about opening up a bookstore. Life is so short with unexpected twists and turns. Why not find something that you love doing?

For a moment, Darcy almost convinced herself the last twelve hours didn’t happen. As image after image hits her, the sinking realization of all she’s lost overwhelms her and all she can think of is to run. Run far away where her shame can’t find her, and most of all, where she’ll never have to see the look of blame in Mason’s eyes. Feeling like a complete failure, she scrambles to make plans. But the voice of her mate-to-be penetrates her frantic thoughts, asking for the chance to show her just how much she is loved.

It hurts Mason deeply to hear Darcy’s thoughts, knowing the events of the previous night have completely rattled her. Grieving over the death of his beloved sister Jasmine, Mason knows he has to act fast. Darcy is all he’s ever wanted and the idea of life without her is unacceptable. Armed with his unswerving love and wolfish charm, he sets out to remind Darcy just how valuable she is and why there is no one else for him but her.

Can Darcy let go of the shame of failure consuming her or will Mason convince her that after all is said and done, she truly is… Cherished?

A Day In The Life of…

Kiki Hamilton

Author of THE FAERIE RING

Over the last two years since my agent, Kate Schafer Testerman, sold my book, THE FAERIE RING, my daily schedule has changed pretty significantly. I was working a full-time job up until a year ago but due to the economic downturn I switched to writing full-time. At first, that gave me lots of time to write, but as we get closer to my release date, more and more of my time is spent on writing-related activities, like responding to emails, blogging, marketing, doing interviews, responding to ARC and bookmark requests, mailing out bookmarks etc. There is much less time to just sit and write!

I’ve also been fortunate to be able to do some traveling for my book. Most of the Class of 2k11 met up in New York in May for BEA, where I got to do a signing with another Tor author, Lisa Desrochers, (PERSONAL DEMONS, ORIGINAL SIN) and I also got to travel to New Orleans in June for ALA and do a signing there, as well.

But, a typical day is more like this: Get up and get on my exercise bike (it’s a recumbent style with my legs in front of me) with my laptop propped up so I can check email etc. Wake my teenage daughter up.  Hop in the shower etc. Wake my daughter up again. Make breakfast etc., take my daughter to school, back home to work. I’m usually at my desk by 8 am.

Once at my desk, I check email again, Twitter, (try not to get sucked into Twitter for an hour…ahem…) Facebook, respond to anything urgent, try to figure out a blog post, then dependant on what I’ve got going on I might work on a new WIP, work on revisions, work on an interview or a blog post etc. That usually takes me to the afternoon, when I go pick up my daughter from school.

From then on the real world takes over – running her to music or sports, cooking dinner, grocery shopping, laundry, paying bills, walking the dog etc. etc. Oh, and sometimes, I slip a game of tennis in there occasionally. I find that I actually write stories more in the evening, while everyone’s sleeping.  And then rinse and repeat. That’s a day in my glamorous life. And I love it!

But probably the best part of being an author though, is the wonderful, kind and thoughtful notes and emails I get from readers all over the world who have either read an advance copy of my book and loved it or are so excited about THE FAERIE RING. That part has been amazingly awesome and I’m so grateful!!

Thank you so much, Kiki!  It’s always such a pleasure getting a glimpse into the lives of our favorite authors :)   If anyone out there hasn’t checked out Kiki’s book, THE FAERIE RING, I encourage you to do so!  It looks great and I can’t wait to read it!

Debut novelist Kiki Hamilton takes readers from the gritty slums and glittering ballrooms of Victorian London to the beguiling but menacing Otherworld of the Fey in this spellbinding tale of romance, suspense, and danger.

The year is 1871, and Tiki has been making a home for herself and her family of orphans in a deserted hideaway adjoining Charing Cross Station in central London. Their only means of survival is by picking pockets. One December night, Tiki steals a ring, and sets off a chain of events that could lead to all-out war with the Fey. For the ring belongs to Queen Victoria, and it binds the rulers of England and the realm of Faerie to peace. With the ring missing, a rebel group of faeries hopes to break the treaty with dark magic and blood—Tiki’s blood.

Unbeknownst to Tiki, she is being watched—and protected—by Rieker, a fellow thief who suspects she is involved in the disappearance of the ring. Rieker has secrets of his own, and Tiki is not all that she appears to be. Her very existence haunts Prince Leopold, the Queen’s son, who is driven to know more about the mysterious mark that encircles her wrist.

Prince, pauper, and thief—all must work together to secure the treaty…

Day in the Life of Trevor Shane, author of CHILDREN OF PARANOIA

a peek into the lives of our favorite authors

A Day in the Life…

Trevor Shane, author of CHILDREN OF PARANOIA

My day usually starts when my two-year old son, Leo, wakes up and serenades me and my wife with shouts of “Mommy!  Milk!” until my wife dutifully rises to meet our little boss’ demands.  Leo says milk with a strange southern twang, making it a two-syllable word–“meee-ilk”–despite living in Brooklyn since he was only a few weeks old.  I usually lay in bed for another forty minutes or so, contemplating the writing that I’d done the night before and listening to the sounds of my wife and son’s morning routine.  Until recently, that meant listening to my wife read Leo his favorite books.  Recently, it’s meant listening to Leo narrate those same books back to my wife with his own special twists.  Never before has The Cat and the Hat featured so many dinosaurs and firetrucks.

At around 6:40 in the morning, I get up and gather my things for my day job.  If inspired, I’ll make a few changes to whatever I was writing the night before though I never have time for more than a sentence or two of revisions in the morning.  The advantage of writing late at night is that the ideas are fresh in your mind when you got to sleep and are susceptible to being toyed with by your subconscious while you dream.  NPR goes on when I’m done writing and I’ll play with my son for an hour or so before it’s time to leave for work.

I bike to work, dropping Leo off at daycare on the way.  Leo sits behind me during the ride, pounding on my back and shouting “Daddy! School bus!” and “Puppy dog!” with irresistible glee, trying to make sure that I don’t miss the spectacle around us (I generally try to avoid exclamation points when writing but have found that I can’t write my son’s voice without them).  After dropping my son off, I have another three miles to go which takes me over the Brooklyn Bridge.  At the height of the bridge, I have the enviable view of the Empire State Building on my right and the Statue of Liberty on my left.  I listen to audio books while I ride.  It’s the only way I’ve found to fit reading into my schedule.  I’m able to “read” at least one book a month this way.  I think my writing has benefited from listening to audiobooks if only because it’s given me the chance to hear stories read in someone’s voice other than my own.

My day at work starts at 9am and lasts for about ten hours.  Sometimes it feels like a distraction.  If writing has been particularly frustrating, it feels like an escape.  The day job pays the bills and allows me to write without fear.  I’m grateful for it.  I don’t write at all during the day, though I’ll sometimes take a call from my editor or agent and I’ll interact with friends/readers on Twitter, Facebook and Goodreads.  Despite physically being away from my writing all day, my mind doesn’t let it go, going back to it over and over again.  It works for me.  I’ve found that many of my best ideas require some space to gestate and are aided by my inability to immediately write them down.  The white wine ideas can be drunk right away but the red wine ideas require a little air to breath first.

When the weather is nice, the Brooklyn Bridge is full of tourists in the evenings.  They slow me down, slow-footedly gazing at the sites that I’m lucky enough to see everyday.  I usually get home about a half an hour before Leo goes to sleep.  He usually welcomes me home by telling me exactly what he had for dinner.  I brush his teeth and we read few books.  Then I put him to bed.

My wife usually cooks dinner while I’m prepping Leo for bed.  He goes to bed at around 8 in the evening.  Then my wife and I sit down for dinner.  After we eat, I start writing (or editing, depending on where I am in the process) and usually write until about 1am.  I only get frustrated with my schedule when I have to stop writing because I’m too tired to go on and not because I’ve exhausted all of the ideas eager to explode from my fingers.  From 6am to 9pm my life is wonderfully normal.  From 9pm to 1am, it’s full of drama, intrigue, violence and heroism.

I usually write five or six days a week.  I force myself to take the one day off even when I don’t want to.  Writing is essential to good writing.  So is rest and life.

CHILDREN OF PARANOIA

by Trevor Shane

Hardcover, 384 pages
Expected publication: September 8th 2011 by Dutton Adult
ISBN: 9780525952374

ALL WARS HAVE RULES

Rule Number One: No killing innocent bystanders.

Rule Number Two: No killing anyone under the age of eighteen.

BREAK THE RULES, BECOME THE TARGET

Since the age of eighteen, Joseph has been assassinating people on behalf of a cause that he believes in but doesn’t fully understand. The War is ageless, hidden in the shadows, governed by a rigid set of rules, and fought by two distinct sides-one good, one evil. The only unknown is which side is which. Soldiers in the War hide in plain sight, their deeds disguised as accidents or random acts of violence amidst an unsuspecting population ignorant of the brutality that is always inches away.

Killing people is the only life Joseph has ever known, and he’s one of the best at it. But when a job goes wrong and he’s sent away to complete a punishingly dangerous assignment, Joseph meets a girl named Maria, and for the first time in his life his singleminded, bloody purpose fades away.

Before Maria, Joseph’s only responsibility was dealing death to the anonymous targets fingered by his superiors. Now he must run from the people who have fought by his side to save what he loves most in this world. As Children of Paranoia reaches its heart-in-throat climax, Joseph will learn that only one rule remains immutable: the only thing more dangerous than fighting the War…is leaving it.

Review:

“Children of Paranoia” is one of those books that I normally wouldn’t have picked up, simply because it is a bit outside of my normal reading genres. After reading this book, I am so glad I did! Trevor Shane weaves a tale that is both extraordinary and believable, keeping the reader turning pages in an effort to find out what happens next.

First, I have to say that I have my fingers and toes crossed that Trevor is currently (or has already completed) writing a sequel to this debut novel. Seeing Maria come back as a stronger, more determined character would be great and the ending makes me think that Trevor has a plan for her.

The emotion in “Children of Paranoia” is strong, real, and raw. Never would I have guessed that I would ever care for an assassin, but Trevor made me do it. He wrote Joseph in such a way that you simply couldn’t help but feel for the guy. Growing up in the world that Trevor created forced Joe into most of the situations he found himself in, which made it easier for me to connect with him. At the same time, he was an assassin! Going along with Joe on his “jobs” was definitely a different experience for me and made the story even more gripping.

This novel is written from an interesting angle. First person POV, but written as though Joe is writing in a journal to Maria. I found this to be a refreshing and fun way to read. Maybe because that’s how I would probably write, maybe because it was almost like listening to Joe tell his story, but either way, it was a great break from the normal.

“Children of Paranoia” was one of those books that you don’t want to end but you can’t wait to find out what happens next. I definitely recommend this read for anyone who likes suspense.

Rating: 4/5!
