A Day In The Life of…

Kiki Hamilton

Author of THE FAERIE RING

Over the last two years since my agent, Kate Schafer Testerman, sold my book, THE FAERIE RING, my daily schedule has changed pretty significantly. I was working a full-time job up until a year ago but due to the economic downturn I switched to writing full-time. At first, that gave me lots of time to write, but as we get closer to my release date, more and more of my time is spent on writing-related activities, like responding to emails, blogging, marketing, doing interviews, responding to ARC and bookmark requests, mailing out bookmarks etc. There is much less time to just sit and write!

I’ve also been fortunate to be able to do some traveling for my book. Most of the Class of 2k11 met up in New York in May for BEA, where I got to do a signing with another Tor author, Lisa Desrochers, (PERSONAL DEMONS, ORIGINAL SIN) and I also got to travel to New Orleans in June for ALA and do a signing there, as well.

But, a typical day is more like this: Get up and get on my exercise bike (it’s a recumbent style with my legs in front of me) with my laptop propped up so I can check email etc. Wake my teenage daughter up.  Hop in the shower etc. Wake my daughter up again. Make breakfast etc., take my daughter to school, back home to work. I’m usually at my desk by 8 am.

Once at my desk, I check email again, Twitter, (try not to get sucked into Twitter for an hour…ahem…) Facebook, respond to anything urgent, try to figure out a blog post, then dependant on what I’ve got going on I might work on a new WIP, work on revisions, work on an interview or a blog post etc. That usually takes me to the afternoon, when I go pick up my daughter from school.

From then on the real world takes over – running her to music or sports, cooking dinner, grocery shopping, laundry, paying bills, walking the dog etc. etc. Oh, and sometimes, I slip a game of tennis in there occasionally. I find that I actually write stories more in the evening, while everyone’s sleeping.  And then rinse and repeat. That’s a day in my glamorous life. And I love it!

But probably the best part of being an author though, is the wonderful, kind and thoughtful notes and emails I get from readers all over the world who have either read an advance copy of my book and loved it or are so excited about THE FAERIE RING. That part has been amazingly awesome and I’m so grateful!!

Thank you so much, Kiki!  It’s always such a pleasure getting a glimpse into the lives of our favorite authors :)   If anyone out there hasn’t checked out Kiki’s book, THE FAERIE RING, I encourage you to do so!  It looks great and I can’t wait to read it!

Debut novelist Kiki Hamilton takes readers from the gritty slums and glittering ballrooms of Victorian London to the beguiling but menacing Otherworld of the Fey in this spellbinding tale of romance, suspense, and danger.

The year is 1871, and Tiki has been making a home for herself and her family of orphans in a deserted hideaway adjoining Charing Cross Station in central London. Their only means of survival is by picking pockets. One December night, Tiki steals a ring, and sets off a chain of events that could lead to all-out war with the Fey. For the ring belongs to Queen Victoria, and it binds the rulers of England and the realm of Faerie to peace. With the ring missing, a rebel group of faeries hopes to break the treaty with dark magic and blood—Tiki’s blood.

Unbeknownst to Tiki, she is being watched—and protected—by Rieker, a fellow thief who suspects she is involved in the disappearance of the ring. Rieker has secrets of his own, and Tiki is not all that she appears to be. Her very existence haunts Prince Leopold, the Queen’s son, who is driven to know more about the mysterious mark that encircles her wrist.

Prince, pauper, and thief—all must work together to secure the treaty…
